There's a hidden danger in smartphones.

Last week, a Dallas girl's phone got hot under her pillow in the middle of the night and caught fire.
Three hours after falling asleep, 13-year-old Ariel Tolfree said she felt the heat and woke up. She said
everything was charred and there was a hole in her mattress. Her phone was destroyed, but she wasn't injured.

Tolfree and her family suspect it was the lithium-ion battery, which was a replacement and not the phone's original battery.

At least one major phone company warns customers that leaving their smartphones under bedding may cause a fire or even an explosion.

Experts say what happened to Tolfree is rare, but can obviously happen.
Lithium-ion batteries are used in many products, from phones to tablets. They can overheat, sometimes reaching 350 degrees.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and CTIA-The Wireless Association offer these safety tips when using lithium-ion batteries:
  • Do not use batteries and chargers that are incompatible with your mobile device. Some websites and secondhand dealers not associated with reputable manufacturers and carriers have been found to be selling incompatible, counterfeit, or poorly manufactured batteries and chargers. Consumers should purchase manufacturer or carrier recommended products and accessories. If unsure about whether a replacement battery or charger is compatible with your mobile device, contact the original equipment manufacturer.
  • Do not let a loose battery come in contact with metal objects, such as coins, keys, or jewelry. Metal objects can cross the electrical connections and cause an incident.
  • Do not crush, puncture or put a high degree of pressure on the battery, as this can cause an internal short-circuit, resulting in overheating.
  • Do not place the phone or batteries in areas that may get very hot, such as on or near a cooking surface, cooking appliance, iron, or radiator.
  • Avoid dropping the mobile device. Dropping it, especially on a hard surface, can potentially cause damage to the device and battery. If you suspect damage to the device or battery, take it to a service center for inspection.
  • Do not let your mobile device or battery get wet. Even though the device will dry and appear to operate normally, the battery contacts or circuitry could slowly corrode and pose a safety hazard.
  • Follow battery usage, storage, and charging guidelines found in the user’s guide.

Did you miss something while continuously checking smartphone as your spouse waited for undivided attention at dinner? You may not have an answer but researchers have.

"Individuals are more likely to miss subtle cues, facial expressions, changes in the tone of their conversation, partner’s voice and have less eye contact just because a cell phone is physically present,” said researchers from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), US, in a study. Even without active use, they noted, the presence of mobile technologies has the potential to divert individuals from face-to-face exchanges, thereby undermining the character and depth of these connections.

Previous research has demonstrated that smartphones make us more selfish, more easily distracted and more stressed. A recent survey has suggested that nearly nine in 10 people feel that their loved ones neglect them in favor of technology on a weekly basis. Another observational study found that when parents and young children dine together, parents frequently pay the most attention to their phones, a report in Wall Street Journal said.

Tree grown foods sees it can create respectably further by selecting retail assistants to open particular spares that don't offer all Apple things. These stores could be more minute than a typical Apple Premium Reseller store that need to stock all Apple things. A vaccine for HIV being developed by the Norwegian vaccine company Bionor Pharma could soon be a reality as researchers have found that median HIV viral load reduction more than doubled among participants with high anti-C5/gp41732-744 antibody levels given the Vacc-4x vaccine.

Further analysis of a Phase II study of therapeutic HIV vaccine candidate Vacc-4x revealed a potential biomarker associated with participants who experienced a more profound viral load reduction after receiving the vaccine.

If confirmed, the biomarker may be able to predict which patients will benefit most from the therapeutic HIV vaccine candidate Vacc-4x.

"In spite of very effective drugs against HIV, these need to be taken daily and have significant side-effects," said professor Angus Dalgleish, of St George's, University of London in Britain.

"The ability to replace this daily medication with a vaccine that allows several months of being off-medication, not to mention the enormous financial gains that would be delivered to health services, is a step closer with these preliminary results," Dalgleish added.

St George's, University of London has had a long-standing collaboration with Bionor Pharma in a project to study HIV-associated immune activation that drives disease progression.

Based on St George's work within this field, Bionor Pharma has developed a peptide (C5/gp41732-744) that can be used to detect antibodies against a part of the HIV envelope glycoprotein.

The presence of antibodies to this part of HIV has been associated with slowed disease progression in the absence of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART)

Amid speculations on the release date of Apple's upcoming flagship smartphone, iPhone 6, a report has suggested that the display of the 4.7-inch model might not have been made of sapphire crystal glass after a new test indicating that the iPhone 5s home button is harder than the next generation smartphone's screen.
It was earlier reported that both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models of iPhone 6 might have a scratch-free sapphire crystal glass screen, which is unbreakable and second only to diamond in hardness.

In a video, YouTube user Marques Brownlee has put the screens of iPhones to torture test, rating the hardness of mineral by using the Mohs scale. He used two sandpapers – garnet that is rated 7 on the Mohs scale of 1-10, and emery rated 8 – to scratch the screens of the purported iPhone 6 and its predecessor. Surprisingly, scratch marks are much deeper on iPhone 5s screen that in its successor.

The uploader said that the Touch ID home button of iPhone 5s, which is made of pure sapphire glass, couldn't be scratched by the sandpapers but it is not the case with the 4.7-inch model of iPhone 6, indicating that the screen of the upcoming smartphone is not made of pure sapphire, as speculated earlier. He went on to say that it would not be wise for Apple Inc. to use a full sapphire screen because of cost and flexibility factors.

The test has indicated that the screen of the 4.7-inch model of iPhone 6 could be coated with sapphire or next-generation version of Gorilla Glass, as it is harder than the Gorilla Glass used in iPhone 5s but softer than sapphire.

It was earlier reported that both the small and large models of iPhone 6 would have sapphire glass display before a new report emerged that the mineral would be seen only in the 5.5-inch variant.

Brownlee had earlier showcased the durability of iPhone 6 screen in a video, scratching the screen with a pointed pocket knife and keys in vain. He also tried to break it by bending it using his hands and feet, but ended saying, "I can break this display under my own power."

A user may not resort to stabbing or scratching the phone screen with hard materials like garnet or emery, or for that matter a pointed knife unless by accident, but most followers of iPhone 6 will be curious to know the material used in its screen following speculations around it.

The 4.7-inch model of iPhone 6 may come with a 1920x1080p (440ppi) resolution, while the larger model may feature a 2272×1280 (510ppi) resolution, according to KDB Daewoo Securities. It is expected to be powered by a 20-nanometer A8 chip (64-bit) processor, run on iOS 8 and come with an 8MP camera with several upgrades, including flash and Optical Image Stabilisation. Apple Insider reported, citing analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that the smartphones may feature low temperature polysilicon in-cell touch panels, Touch ID fingerprint security, NFC and metal casing, and Chinese analyst Sun Chang Xu has revealed that the device might feature sensors that can detect pressure, temperature and humidity.

The device is expected to hit the stores in the month of September though the exact release date is still not known. German website, ApfelPage claimed citing leaked internal documents of German wireless carrier Deutsche Telekom that it will be unveiled on 19 September, contradicting reports that it might happen in the first or second week of the month.

In an effort to reach out to the tech-savvy young generation, BJP's students wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has launched its own mobile app.
The app has been named 'ABVP' and is available free on Google Play for Android users.

"The aim of the app is too encourage more and more youths, who have now become increasingly tech-savvy and like to carry smartphones, to join ABVP and better connect with the
our members by disseminating information about the group's working," ABVP Delhi State Secretary Saket Bahuguna said.

The app will provide users with all information about ABVP from its latest activities, history and views on various issues to contact information of office-bearers and helpline numbers. The app also features details about the group's various chapters (state units).

Another option available on the app is 'Join ABVP', which, Bahuguna said, will enable interested people to join the organisation without any hassle and waiting for the registration camps.
"ABVP has had its presence on social media but this is a great initiative because people can now be part of ABVP from wherever they want... Moreover, joining ABVP through mobile will be free of cost," Bahuguna said.

"At present we have no online facility for registering members but we hold frequent camps across colleges where a paltry sum of two rupees is taken as fee," he added.

The 65-year-old students organisation had been toying with the idea of having such an app for nearly a year and consolidated the idea during the recent general elections which witnessed increased use of mobile apps and social media, Bahuguna said.

The ABVP is hopeful that, with the vacations nearing an end and new sessions in colleges across the country beginning soon, the app will be a big hit among the students. The app was officially launched on July 17 in Mumbai.

Chinese handset maker ZTE is expected to launch its premium 'Nubia Z7 Max' handset in India ahead of the festive season to compete in the fiercely contested smartphone market.
The ZTE Nubia Z7 Max, priced at around Rs. 26,000, is expected to be the first device from ZTE's premium phone range to debut in India, the world's fastest growing smartphone market.

ZTE will launch the device around September-October in the Rs. 24,000 to Rs. 26,000 range, sources said. ZTE launched Nubia in 2012 to tap the premium-end of the European handset market. Other devices under the Nubia range include Z5 S, Z5 Mini and the X6.

Sources said ZTE is confident of the Nubia range doing well in the Indian market and helping it grow its presence in the multi-crore open handset market in India.

Apart from the open market, ZTE also supplies handsets and dongles to telecom operators. Launched in July this year, the dual SIM Nubia Z7 Max features a 5.5-inch screen, 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and runs Android 4.4 KitKat (with Nubia UI 2.0).

It sports 2GB RAM, 32GB memory (expandable up to 64GB), 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera and a 3100 mAh battery. ZTE has two other devices under Nubia Z7 range - Z7 and Z7 Mini. However, details about the launch of these devices in India were not available.

According to reports, ZTE sold 52,800 Nubia Z7 handsets in 4 minutes and 36 seconds in China through a website.

"ZTE is looking at selling Nubia in India through the online route. Discussions are still on," the sources said. Of late, many handset makers like Motorola and Xiaomi have chosen the e-commerce route by partnering firms like Flipkart and Snapdeal to reach customers. This helps them save on distribution costs, which they often pass on to the customers and effectively bringing down the cost of device.

The Indian smartphone market is witnessing strong competition between local and international players, all vying to grab a share of the multi-billion dollar market.

According to IDC, smartphone sales in India grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn.

In January-March 2014, 17.59 million smartphones were shipped into India compared to 6.14 million in the same period of 2013. Samsung was the market leader (35 percent market share in Q1), followed by Micromax (15 percent), Karbonn (10 percent), LAVA (6 percent) and Nokia (4 percent).

Affordable smartphones, especially those priced in the sub-$200 category (Rs. 12,000), are doing well in the Indian market.

Researchers have created a new wrist-mounted robot that provides two extra fingers in order to enhance the grasping motion of the human hand.

Researchers at MIT have developed the device that can be worn around one's wrist, works essentially like two extra fingers adjacent to the pinky and thumb and the novel control algorithm enables it to move in sync with the wearer's fingers to grasp objects of various shapes and sizes. Wearing the robot, a user could use one hand to; for instance, hold the base of a bottle while twisting off its cap.

"Can I Eat this?":
App for travellers to get local taste
and keep away from Diarrhoea
Harry Asada, the Ford Professor of Engineering in MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering, said that this was a completely intuitive and natural way to move the robotic fingers and people don't need to command the robot, but simply move their fingers naturally and the robotic fingers would react and assist those fingers.

The robot, which the researchers have dubbed "supernumerary robotic fingers," consists of actuators linked together to exert forces as strong as those of human fingers during a grasping motion.

Faye Wu would like to take the robot one step further because as of now the robot can only mimic the grasping of a hand, closing in and spreading apart in response to a human's fingers, but the researchers want it to not just control position, but also force. (ANI)

Do your friends think you have turned into a narcissist or less empathic towards others in recent times? Check your Facebook obsession.

According to a new study, some Facebook features like profile photo and status updates are linked with encouraging narcissism.

"The study showed only one Facebook behaviour accurately predicted narcissism levels: user profile picture ratings. For males, only their profile picture ratings were a predictor of narcissism," said Tracy Alloway from University of North Florida.

For women, both profile picture ratings and their status update frequency predicted their narcissism.

"The profile picture is the most tangible aspect of a user's online self-presentation, making it a touchstone for narcissists seeking to draw attention to themselves," Alloway added.

For the study, researchers investigated the relationship among adult Facebook users between ages 18 and 50.

They asked over 400 individuals a range of questions about their Facebook behaviours.

Participants in the study used Facebook an average of two hours per day and had approximately 500 friends for both males and females.

The study demonstrated that while men were more narcissistic, women were more likely to rate their profile pictures as more physically attractive, glamorous and cool.

Females also changed their profile picture more than the males, updating their photo once every two months compared to once every three months for males.

"This may mean that narcissistic women are more likely to use Facebook as a reflecting pool than narcissistic males," the study noted.

The study was published in the journal Social Networking.

A couple of definitions worth knowing: Mainstream backing is the commonly five-year period when Microsoft gives free fixes and fixes, including yet not constrained to security upgrades, for its items. At the point when an item retreats the standard help stage, Microsoft keeps on proviing a period (likewise regularly five years) of developed help, which implies clients get free security settles yet different sorts of upgrades are paid and oblige particular permitting arrangements.

"End of help" means there will be no more fixes or patches - paid or free, security or non-security - wanting particular items. (There are some interim workarounds, as Windows XP clients have uncovered, however when in doubt, end of help means, for most goals and purposes, the end.)

Standard, free backing is closure on January 13, 2015 for various real Microsoft items, including all variants of Windows 7 (Enterprise, Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate and Starter). Developed backing for Windows 7 keeps going until January 14, 2020, so clients can hope to keep on receiing free security overhauls, however not gimmick redesigns, for Windows 7 until that point. For those running Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 connected, the end of standard and expanded help dates are the same - January 13, 2015 and January 14, 2020, individually - given there is no Windows 7 Sp2.

Some industry watchers have guessed that Microsoft will wind up pushing out Windows 7's help dates the way the organization accomplished for XP, given Windows 7's notoriety and pervasiveness, however in this way, there's been no statement from Microsoft authorities that this is the arrangement.

Standard help likewise closes on January 13, 2015 for all adaptations of Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 and all versions of Windows Storage Server 2008. Standard backing for Dynamics C5 2010, NAV 2009 and NAV 2009 R2 closes on January 13, 2015, too.

Complete end of backing for Windows Server 2003 is approaching one year from now, also. On July 14, 2015, Microsoft's augmented help period for that item cuts off, which implies the organization won't be issuing fixes, overhauls or fixes of any sort for that working framework (unless clients have pricey Custom Support Agreements set up). Various little organizations are as of now running Windows Server 2003. Microsoft authorities are planning to persuade them to move to Windows Server 2012 R2 and/or Azure.

Google Glass has been hacked with the goal that it might be controlled by brainwaves.

By joining together the shrewd glasses with an electroencephalography (EEG) headset, the product makes it conceivable to take a picture without moving a muscle.

London-based start-up This Place said the tech could be used in high-weight without hands circumstances -, for example, throughout surgery.

It has discharged the Mindrdr programming for nothing with the expectation that designers will adjust it for different employments.

Google made it clear that it doesn't help the application.

"Google Glass cannot read your mind," a representative told the BBC.

"This particular application seems to work through a separate piece of kit which you attach to Glass.

"We have not reviewed, nor approved, the app so it won't be available in the Glass app store."

Google dispatched Glass in the UK a month ago.

The representative included: "Of course, we are always interested in hearing about new applications of Glass and we've already seen some great research from a variety of medical fields from surgery to Parkinson's."

Fixation concentration

An EEG headset could be utilized to measure when certain parts of the mind demonstrate a more prominent level of action.

For this situation, the Mindrdr programming screens when the wearer takes part in elevated amounts of focus.

Inside Google Glass' "screen" - a little window that shows up in the corner of the wearer's correct eye - a white even line is indicated.

As a client focuses, the white line ascends the screen. When it achieves the top, a picture is taken utilizing Glass' inbuilt Polaroid.

Apple has modified the "Made for iPhone" (MFi) standard to include headphones that connect to iOS devices via the "Lightning" port instead of the headphone jack, according to media reports.

Currently, the Apple-made EarPods use a regular 3.5 mm headphone jack and hence they can be used with any other device with a 3.5 mm audio port.

It also means you can use virtually any other pair of non-apple headphones with your iPhone. But that is not going to be for long. The port switch could also means headphones could be made to work exclusively with a particular app - or even launch a specific app once they are plugged in.

"The system works by recording electrical activity in the patient's brain, recognising his or her intention - such as to take a step or kick a ball - and translating that to action," explained professor Miguel Nicolelis of US-based Duke university and the International Institute for Neurosciences of Natal, Brazil. The system also gives the patient tactile feedback using sensitive artificial skin.

A sense of touch would be essential for the patient's emotional comfort as well as control over the exoskeleton. "Thus the challenge was to give a paralysed person, together with the ability to walk, the feeling of touching the ground," added Gordon Cheng, head of the Institute for Cognitive Systems at the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM), Germany.

The prime minister, who has sought to embrace technology in governance with messianic zeal, has directed officials - ranging from secretaries, joint secretaries and section officers - of different ministries to clear files electronically.

The system is not new. It was introduced around a year ago under the UPA government. But no one really bothered.

But with Modi giving strict instructions that no heaps of files should be found littering office desks, shelves, window sills and even top of airconditioners and that office spaces should not remain cluttered, all senior government functionaries have made a concerted move to go electronic.

"The new government is stressing on making files totally electronic, to end the paper version as far as possible," a senior official told IANS declining to be named.
