Sports: Gagan Narang says I'm happy to win a CWG medal in new event

Gagan Narang might have failed to win record-equalling nine golds in the Commonwealth Games after finishing second in men`s 50m rifle prone but the Indian star marksman said he was happy to clinch a silver in an event where he was participating for the first time.

"I am not disappointed at all, a medal is a medal. I have bagged a medal which I have not won earlier. Rather I am happy that I have won a CWG medal in this event for the first time," Narang said after winning silver in 50m rifle prone, behind Warren Potent of Australia.

"This is not a popular event in terms of medals. It is an event in which India has not done very well and this is a new event for me too. The best an Indian has done in this event was a bronze in 2006 Melbourne (by Sanjiv Rajput). So I am happy that I have done better by winning the silver," said the 31-year-old Indian, who won a bronze in 10m air rifle in 2012 London Olympics.

Narang today failed to become the only three shooters to win nine gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, having bagged four each in both 2006 and 2010, but he would be gunning for that achievement and join Michael Gault of England and another Indian Jaspal Rana in the nine-gold club when he takes the field tomorrow in the 50m rifle 3 positions.

"It is a good beginning to the Glasgow Games for me as I have won a silver. It was a fairly good performance from me and I am hoping for an even better show tomorrow," he said.

"My third CWG and nine medals so far, it has been a great journey and I am not disappointed in any way."

Asked if there was any flaw in his performance today, he pointed out to the 9.2 he shot in the third series (eighth shot).

"I saw the wind coming and I made a mistake there. That 9.2 shot cost me and had it been better than that I might have won the gold or the fight for the gold would have been even closer," he said.

Sports: CWG 2014: India draw blank in badminton mixed team event

Delhi Games silver medallists India drew a blank in the badminton mixed team event after going down fighting to Singapore 2-3 in the bronze medal play-off at the 20th Commonwealth Games here on Monday.

Despite star attaction Saina Nehwal`s pull out from the Games in the last minute, there were high expectations from Indian shuttlers especially with P V Sindhu, Parupalli Kashyap and reigining Commonwealth women`s doubles champion pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa up their ranks.

But the Pullela Gopichand coached badminton contingent failed to deliver when it mattered most to return empty handed from the mixed team event.

It was not the best of starts to the bronze medal encounter for 10th ranked India, who lost to 2010 Delhi Games bronze medallist England 0-3 in the semifinals yesterday.

In the opening tie, makeshift mixed doubles pair of RMV Gurusaidutt and Ashwini Ponappa fought hard before losing with an identical 19-21 19-21 scoreline to Neo Vanessa and Danny Chrisnanta in 40 minutes to hand Singapore an early 1-0 lead.

The onus was then on Kashyap to bring India level and he didn`t disappoint. The 27-year-old Indian defeat Chao Huang 21-15 22-20 in 37 minutes.

But 11th ranked Singapore restored their lead by winning the men`s doubles contest as Akshay Dewalkar and Pranaav Jerry Chopra lost in straight games against the pair of Chrisnanta and Chayut Triyachart 12-21 16-21.

The responsibility was next put on world number 11 Sindhu to keep India afloat and she successfully fulfilled her duty by getting the better of Xiaoyu Liang 24-22 21-13 in the women`s singles rubber.

With reigining Commonwealth Games champions Jwala and Ashwini left to take the courts, India were definitely touted as favourites by now to win the contest.

In the deciding women`s doubles match, Jwala and Ashwini were up against Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei, a pair whom the India duo defeated en route to their Commonwealth Games title four years ago in New Delhi.

But the script turned out to be different this time around as the Singaporean girls produced a gritty performance to upstage Jwala and Ashwini 21-17 29-27 in a marathon 56-minute clash to avenge their defeat in the last edition of the Games.

Sports: CWG 2014: Jitu Rai and Gurpal Singh bags a gold and silver respectively in men`s 50m pistol event.

Indian shooters continued their dominance at the Barry Buddon Shooting Range with `Pistol King` Jitu Rai and Gurpal Singh bagging a gold and silver respectively in the men`s 50m pistol event here on Monday.

26-year-old Rai, world No 4 in the event, shot a total of 194.1 to bag his first Commonwealth Games gold on debut while Gurpal had an aggregate of 187.2 to win the silver, his first international medal. Australia`s Daniel Repacholi was third.

With the two medals, India`s medal tally from the Barry Buddon Shooting Center has shot up to 11 (4, 6, 1), three more than England who have eight including three gold medals.

Nepal-born Rai, who won a gold (in 10m air pistol) and a silver (in 50m pistol) in the World Cup last month, was third in the first series but then recovered quickly and led the field throughout after that.

By the halfway mark of the elimination stage which has two shots for each series, Rai had taken a lead of 5.2 from his nearest rival. That included a magnificient 10.8 in his 10th shot.

By the seventh round, Rai had taken a huge seven point lead and at that stage it was clear who would win the gold.

Gurpal shot up to second spot in the last three rounds but could not catch up his senior colleague who won the gold with a huge 6.9 difference.

At one time, Gurpal went out of medal bracket but recovered in fine fashion after shooting just 7.2 by coming up with a series of impressive shots to finish for silver.

Sumit Sangwan began his campaign at the 2014 Commonwealth Games with a comfortable 3-0 win over Mohammed Hakimu Fumu as the Indian pugilist reached the quarterfinals of the Men`s Light Heavy 81kg category, here Sunday.

21-year-old Sangwan was dominant in all three rounds as he all three judges declared him clear winner.

He will now fight it out with New Zealand`s Davis Nyika for a place in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Sports: CWG 2014: Satish Sivalingam bags gold in men's 77kg weightlifting

It was double delight for India in the 2014 Commonwealth Games men`s weightlifting as Satish Sivalingam won the gold and Ravi Katulu the silver in the 77kg Group A at the Clyde Auditorium here late Sunday.

Satish lifted a total of 328 kg to set a Games Record while Ravi got the silver with a total lift of 317 kg.

The bronze went to Australian Francois Etoundi with a lift of 314 kg. Etoundi, who represented his country of birth Cameroon in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, sought asylum in Australia soon after the Melbourne Games.

Sports: CWG 2014: Shooters win two more medals, weightlifter Punam wins bronze

Shooters continued to lead India's medal charge with Shreyasi Singh and Mohammed Asab clinching the double trap silver and the bronze while woman lifter Punam Yadav picked up a bronze on a modest day four of competition for the nation at the 2014 Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

On a day when India failed to bag any yellow metal, the country's medal count touched 20 - five gold, eight silver and seven bronze - and the 2010 hosts were still in the fifth place behind Australia (24-18-23), England (21-16-16), Scotland (11-7-9) and Canada (7-3-8). India had taken the second spot in the medal ranking behind Games powerhouse Australia four years back.

Shreyasi grabbed the day's first medal - a silver - with a final round score of 92 at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre. Another Indian in the fray, Varsha Varman was fifth logging 88 points.

Shortly after, Asab grabbed the first shooting bronze from the 2014 edition after he defeated 17-year-old Nathan Xuereb of Malta in the men's double third place play-off match. Asab had topped the qualifying round netting 135 points.

The 26-year-old Asab shot 26 while Xuereb managed 24. India's Ankur Mittal missed out on a medal finishing fifth in the semi-final.

Later in the day, Punam won the seventh medal from weightlifting by earning the bronze in women's 63 kg category. Punam had a total lift of 202 kg behind Nigerians Olauwatoyin Adesanmi and Obioma Okoli who took the gold and silver, respectively.

The Indian had a best lift of 88 kg on her third attempt in snatch and 114 kg on her second attempt in clean and jerk.

There was also good news from the boxing ring as Manoj Kumar entered the quarterfinals of the men's 64 kg event. The 27-year-old defeated Canadian Arthur Biyarslanov 2:1 in the Round of 16 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. In the last eight, Manoj will take on England's Samuel Maxwell Tuesday.
But there was disappointment for India in table tennis, women's hockey, track and field and cycling events.

The women's table tennis team, that had bagged a silver in their backyard four years back, missed out on the bronze medal match, losing to Australia 1-3 at the Scotstoun Table Tennis Centre here Sunday.

In lawn bowls, India won their first match in section B against South Africa 17-12 in the men's fours lawn bowls at the Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls centre. With the win, India are now second behind Canada in the group.

In the singles event, Sunil Bahadur lost to 21-20 to Malaysia's Muhammed Hizlee Abdul Rais.
Both India and Canada have a win each but the North American team is on top on account of better difference in points incurred. India will face Falkland Islands in their next group match.

The women's hockey team lost their second Pool A match 0-3 to New Zealand at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre here Sunday. After defeating Canada 4-2 in their opener, India could not even manage to score a single goal against the Black Sticks.

Gemma Flynn scored the lone field goal for New Zealand while Anita Punt scored twice, once from a penalty corner and another from a penalty stroke. India will take on Trinidad and Tobago Monday.

The only happy development from the track came when Poovamma Machettira qualified for the women's 400 metre semi-final after a heat timing of 54.01 seconds. Indian shot putter Om Parkash Singh Karhana failed to reach the men's finals after he ended fifth in his Group B qualification.

Karhana, who hails from Gurgaon, threw a best of 18.98m on his third and final attempt. His first two throws went for 17.67m and 18.54m, respectively.

Indian sprinter Narayana Sharadha failed to qualify for the women's 100 metre semi-final after managing only a fifth placed out of eight competitors in the heat.

The semi-finals, followed by the final, will be held Sunday.

All three Indian track cyclists on show - Amarjit Nagi in, men's keirinm, Alan Baby in men's keirin first round repechage and Sunita Yanglem in women's 25 km points race - had a disappointing outing.

Indian squash player Anaka Alankamony earned a 3-1 win over Mihiliya Methsarani of Sri Lanka to enter the women`s plate final at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

The 20-year-old Chennai girl won 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 to enter the summit clash where she will take on Welsh Deon Saffery.

The Indian women`s hockey team lost 0-3 to higher ranked New Zealand in their second Pool A match of the 20th Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

The Black Sticks managed to sneak through the Indian defence in the third minute and Gemma Flynn did not disappoint, scoring the first goal at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Some promising passing moves from India raised hopes and they played well to disallow World No.4 New Zealand from scoring till half-time.

The second half saw India attacking and dominated play for the first 10 minutes. But in the 46th minute New Zealand earned a penalty corner which Anita Punt converted to take a 2-0 lead.

Anita managed to add on to the score in the 53rd minute when she converted a penalty stroke to make it 3-0.

India will take on Trinidad and Tobago in their third match Monday.

Sports: CWG 2014: Indian men's TT team wins, but women's team loses

Indian men's table tennis team blanked hosts Scotland 3-0 to reach the semifinals but it was curtains for their women counterpart after they suffered a 1-3 loss to Singapore in the last four contest at the 20th Commonwealth Games here today.

Soumyajit Ghosh started the proceedings for Indian men's team as he brushed aside 29-year-old Gavin Rumgay 11-6 11-5 11-6 to put India ahead at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

Experienced campaigner Achanta Sharath Kamal then took the court and notched up a 11-7 11-7 11-8 win over Craig Howieson to make it 2-0.

 

The hosts needed a win in the third match to stay afloat but Harmeet Desai and Ghosh put paid to their hopes after beating the pair Sean Doherty and Craig 11-7 11-8 11-6 to complete the 3-0 drubbing.

For the Indian women's team, who had lost to Singapore at Delhi Games to settle for silver, Manika Batra was the only bright spot.

Shamini Kumaresan was given the responsibility to give India a positive start but the Indian lost to Tienwei Feng 1-11 11-13 5-11 in the first match.

Manika then played her heart out and eked out a 11-7 5-11 11-8 5-11 11-7 win over Mengyu Yu to help India draw level at 1-1 after the second match.

Madhurika Patkar and Kumaresan then paired up but they could not get across Lin Ye and Mengyu as they went down 9-11 7-11 5-11 as Singapore were leading 2-1.

In the fourth match, the onus was put on Manika again to bring India back in the contest. The Delhi girl tried her best before going down 9-11 11-9 6-11 5-11 as India crashed out of the competition.

Earlier, the women's team had defeated New Zealand 3-0 and Shamini Kumaresan played a vital role in the victory.

The ploy to play Shamini in the first singles against 52-year-old Chun Li worked. The Indian played a solid match to beat 2002 singles Commonwealth Games champion and five-time Olympian 5-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-5.

Manika, who plays with a pimpled rubber, outsmarted Chunl Li's sister Karen 11-13, 11-9, 11-5, 11-5 to give India a 2-0 cushion.

In the doubles rubber, being played in the team competition for the first time at Games, Shamini and Madhurika Patkar outplayed Karen and Yang Sun 11-8, 11-8, 11-8 for India's well deserved victory.

"The match was much tougher than what the scoreline suggests. The New Zealand team is full of Chinese and we had a hard time beating them in Delhi four years ago," coach Bhawani Mukherjee told PTI referring to India's 3-2 win over New Zealand in the Delhi edition.

"We made the decision to field Shamini against Chun Li and it worked out well. The other girls also did their job," said Mukherjee.

The losing semifinalists will battle for the bronze tomorrow.
