Mary Kom, which is a biopic on India's Olympic medal winning boxer from Manipur, features Priyanka Chopra in prosthetic makeup in the titular role. The first poster and the teaser trailer, both of which saw the actress flexing some serious muscle, has got a lot of attention on social media, with a raging debate on whether she should have been picked to play the role of a Northeastern Indian, over an actress from the region.
This is not a question of whether Chopra is talented (she is), but whether she looks Manipuri (she doesn’t). The assumption that no one in the North East is talented enough to play Kom’s part is outstandingly arrogant. Chopra may well have done her best to play Kom’s part and perhaps we’ll see that she’s done a great job. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Kom’s identity of being a woman from Manipur is an integral part of her story.
