Bollywood producer alleged that Malayalam blockbuster is an adaptation of novel The Devotion Of Suspect X
While the makers of Drishyam were in celebratory mood as the film’s Telugu and Kannada remake is doing well at the box office, Balaji Telefilms supremo Ekta Kapoor might have cut shot the celebrations by sending a legal notice to Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph.
Balaji Telefilms has acquired the remake rights of author Keigo Higashino’s book The Devotion Of Suspect X. It was reported earlier that ace producer had claimed Drishyam to be an unofficial adaptation of the novel and her legal team was contemplating the next plan of action. Now we hear that Ekta has sent a legal notice to Jeethu Joseph who is planning to remake Drishyam in Tamil and Hindi.
The Malayalam filmmaker responded to the notice saying,” After Ekta’s legal team sent us the letter, I watched the Japanese film, Suspect X, which is an adaptation of the Japanese novel. There could be similarities between my film and that Japanese film, but my film is neither an adaptation nor a copy. The Japanese film is also about a murder cover-up and hence the allegation. Similarities are quite common in the works of creators and that shouldn’t be made into an issue.”
“Ekta’s team might be concerned that the Drishyam Hindi remake may affect their project. But this remake will be different from their project as my film is completely not based on that book. Anyway, I won’t be directing the Hindi version as I have prior commitments in Malayalam.” added the director.
After minting some serious money and garnering rave reviews, Drishyam seems to have landed in trouble. Watch out for this space for more updates on this issue.
